Parent Visa Options

  • Parent Visa (Subclass 103)
This is a permanent visa that allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia on a permanent basis. However, there can be long waiting time for this visa option up to 30 years. This is due to the number of applications received by DIBP, and a limited number of places available each financial year. The applicant may be in or outside Australia at the time of the application but should be outside when the visa is granted.

  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)
This is a temporary visa that allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia for two years. However, once visa has expired, the holder cannot re-apply or extend his stay. If the holder wishes to remain permanently in Australia, Contributory Parent Visa 143 (permanent) should be submitted. The applicant may be in or outside Australia at the time of the application but should be outside when the visa is granted.

Further, this visa option costs higher but processed faster. In addition, applying for this visa before applying for a permanent visa can spread the immigration costs.

  • Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143)

Alternatively, the applicant may apply for subclass 103. This costs less, but there can be long waiting times for this visa option for up to 30 years.
