Mining Engineers worked in most parts of Australia, with Western Australia having the largest portion of mining engineers. They primarily work in Mining; Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and Manufacturing industries. Common duties include:
conduct surveys of mineral, petroleum and natural gas deposits to determine the resources present and the extraction process’ design and development
prepare operation and project cost estimates and production schedules, and report progress, production and costs compared to budget
prepare plans for tunnels and chambers, location and construction of mine shafts, the layout of mine development and the application of appropriate mining techniques
plan and coordinate the utilisation of labour and equipment consistent with efficiency targets, statutes, safety guidelines and environmental conditions
Employment fell in the last five years and will continue in the next five years: from 9,500 in 2018 to 8,900 by 2023. The occupation is expected to generate 3,000 job openings per year.
Mining Engineers are required to have bachelor’s degree, years of relevant experience, and registration.
