Software Engineers, also sometimes called Software Developers, work closely with clients to plan and create software systems. They are therefore expected to have strong programming skills to enable them to properly communicate user requirements with Programmers, develop algorithms, analyse and solve programming issues. Unlike Programmers, they are not directly concerned with the actual writing of codes. They are instead focused primarily on assessing, defining, and addressing the needs of the users all throughout the applications or systems development process. They are responsible for testing the quality of programs developed and maintaining software systems to ensure their reliability and efficiency.
Software Engineers are also known as Software Designer or Software Architect. Associated with any of those job titles are the primary duties revolving around the design, development, modification, documentation, testing, implementation, installation, and support of software applications and systems that can facilitate more efficient work for their end users. They are also responsible for application and/or systems upgrade as well as fixing them when necessary. Other related, yet more specialised occupations include Database Designer, Computer Applications Engineer, Systems Architect.
While a Bachelor's Degree in related fields is the basic requirement for this occupation, an industry survey revealed that most experienced Software Engineers in the country have attained leadership roles combined with their Master's Degree in Information Technology or other relevant courses. They have an average base salary of $99,707 per annum.
On the other hand, those at entry-level to about 4 years of relevant experience have starting base pay of $73,147. As they grow and become more skilled in their work experience, Software Engineers are able to earn as much as $144,335 base per annum. Training and actual experience in Java is usually associated with the higher end of the salary range for this job, and industry statistics have also shown that a software engineering job provides an excellent pathway to a managerial role such as IT Project Manager.
Essentials:
A Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Programming or Information Technology
Proficiency in Java, C, C++, C#, programming, among others
Proficiency in database design and development (SQL)
Minimum of 2 years' relevant experience within the last 5 years
Strong problem-solving abilities and good presentation skills
Excellent English communication skills
High adaptability and strong teamwork orientation
Desirable:
Experience in Python programming
Selenium, JUnit and a basic understanding of test automation
Experience in multiple platform work environment (Linus/Unix/C++, Java, iOS, Objective C, etc)
Experience in distributed systems and network programming
Master's Degree in related field
