Medical Practitioners

Medical Practitioners are responsible for diagnosis, medical treatment, and care of patients. Common duties include:  

  • examine patients to identify the nature of their complaints, and conduct tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures

  • determine diagnosis based on examination and test outcomes

  • select and administer appropriate treatments and therapies and advise patients of further treatment and preventive options 

  • prescribe and dispense medication and prosthetic and corrective devices

  • monitor patient’s progress and response to treatment

  • record patient’s illness, treatment administered and patients' responses and progress

Medical Practitioners work in a range of different occupations, which includes general practitioners, specialists, non-specialist and medical interns. Non-hospital positions are also included, such as clinicians, administrators, educators, and researchers.

 

Minimum requirements for Medical Practitioners include a bachelor degree or higher, one to two years hospital-based training, at least five years of specialist study, relevant experience, and registration.
