Toolmakers and Engineering Patternmakers construct and fix tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and other precision parts and equipment for machine tools and other production machinery. They also build full-size engineering, visual and experimental models and models to produce prototype developmental products. Common duties are:
review illustrations and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of products to be manufactured and models to be designed
measure and mark out metal stock and castings using various gauges
shape metal and wood stock using machine tools
verify the accuracy of manufactured articles and finished patterns to fine tolerances, using precision measuring instruments
test manufactured articles, and modify as needed
apply protective finishes to patterns to indicate the method of assembly
assemble pattern sections and shape workpieces to specified finish
