Current Australian Labour Market Trends
The Australian labour market shows continued strength, with some signs of potential moderation. Here are key takeaways from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Labour Force Survey (February 2024):
Employment by Industry
Health Care and Social Assistance: Highest growth (+108,000 jobs) – in-demand healthcare jobs
Education and Training: Added 51,900 jobs – teachers, trainers
Construction: Increased by 36,300 jobs – construction workers, builders
Industries with job decline include Accommodation and Food Services (-18,000) and Financial and Insurance Services (-6,600).
Employment by State and Occupation
Australian Capital Territory (ACT): Highest share of high-skilled workers (60.8%) – Canberra jobs
Victoria and New South Wales (NSW): Also notable with 54.8% and 53.7% respectively.
High-skilled employment rose across most states, with the ACT leading the growth.
Unemployment Rates
National unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.8% (Feb 2024) from 3.5% (previous year).
South Australia (SA) saw a decrease (4.0% to 3.8%).
NSW and Victoria experienced increases (3.6% and 3.9%, respectively).
Migrant Employment and Unemployment
Employment rates highest in Tasmania (84.4%) and lowest in Western Australia (58.6%) for Australian-born individuals.
Highest migrant employment rates from non-English speaking countries were in Victoria (29.8%), NSW (28.4%), and ACT (27.4%).
Migrant Labour Force Participation
Migrants in Australia for over 20 years have similar participation rates as Australian-born citizens.
Recent migrants face higher unemployment due to factors like language proficiency and work experience.
Industry Employment Distribution
Health Care and Social Assistance: Largest employer (15.6% of total).
Construction, Retail Trade, Professional Services: Significant employers across various states.
Western Australia has a high proportion of jobs in Mining (10.1%).
State-Specific Insights
Population Distribution: NSW and Victoria are the most populated states.
Net Overseas Migration: Highest in NSW and Victoria, reflecting strong job markets.
