Important Changes to Temporary Work Visas in Australia (Subclass 457, 482, & 494)

Effective July 1, 2024

The Australian Government is making changes to visa conditions to improve support for temporary skilled workers and address concerns about exploitation. This applies to holders of:

  • Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457)

  • Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 494)

 

More Flexibility to Find New Work

If you lose your job with your sponsor, you can now:

  • Look for new work for up to 180 days at a time

  • Work for a total of up to 365 days during your entire visa period with different employers

  • Work in occupations outside your original sponsorship (during your job search)

 

Important Reminders

  • You cannot work for another employer until you stop working for your sponsor (unless exempt).

  • You must remain in your nominated occupation while working with your current sponsor.

  • Your sponsor must notify the government within 28 days if they stop sponsoring you or if you resign.

  • You must still meet any licensing or registration requirements for your occupation.

 

These changes apply to all visa holders:

  • Those who already have a visa

  • Those who are granted a visa on or after July 1, 2024

 

Note: Any time you spent unemployed before July 1, 2024 won’t count towards the new time limits.
