Trainee Visas

Training Visa (Subclass 407)

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) is a temporary visa for individuals who wish to come to Australia to participate in occupational training or professional development for up to two years. This visa is a crucial component of Australian workforce development and helps to address skills shortages by allowing international trainees to enhance their abilities in an Australian work environment.

Eligibility
To qualify for a Subclass 407 Visa, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Be sponsored by an approved sponsor to participate in workplace-based occupational training or professional development.

  • Be identified in an approved nomination by an Australian organisation.

  • Have functional English language skills.

  • Have a genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia.

  • Have adequate financial support and health insurance for yourself and accompanying family members while in Australia.

  • Meet health and character requirements.

  • Be at least 18 years of age (in most circumstances).

Sponsorship

To be an approved sponsor, the organisation must be lawfully operating in Australia, be a government agency, or a foreign government agency. The Department of Home Affairs must also be satisfied that the sponsor has the capacity to meet its sponsorship obligations and can directly provide the training.

Nomination

An organisation can nominate someone for a Training Visa if it is an approved temporary activities sponsor or has an application for sponsorship pending. Applicants may qualify under one of the following categories, depending on their circumstances:

  • Workplace-based training required for registration: For individuals who need to undertake workplace-based training to obtain registration, membership, or a license in Australia or their home country.

  • Structured workplace-based training to enhance skills: For individuals with relevant experience seeking to participate in a structured workplace-based training program.

  • Training that promotes capacity building overseas: This category includes programs for overseas students to complete structured workplace-based training in Australia, government-supported training, and professional development for senior-level employees.

Remuneration

Occupational trainees under the Subclass 407 visa must be paid in accordance with existing Australian industrial relations laws, unless they are undertaking volunteer work. A copy of the training contract or agreement, including details of remuneration, must be submitted with the nomination.
