New Global Talent Visa

Senator Michaela Cash announced the introduction of a new pilot highly skilled "Global Talent Visa" to come into place on July 1.

According to Innes Willox, Australian Industry Group (AIG), CEO, "The Global Talent Scheme visa trial announced today puts Australia in a more competitive position to attract the world's best talent". Emerging and startup businesses have been the most critical of the recent 457 clampdowns, and some may be able to utilise the new visa. The visa's focus on higher-end talent and STEM skills and are proposed to be 2 streams, being the "Established Business Stream" and "Start-up Stream". 

1.         Established business Stream is for businesses who are either publicly listed or have an annual turnover of more than $4 million will be able to sponsor highly skilled and experienced individuals for positions earning above AUD$180k.  Nominating employers must demonstrate they prioritise employment of Australians and that a skills transfer to Australians workers will result from the grant of this visa.  

2.         Start-Up Stream: This stream is for Technology-based and STEM-related start-up businesses will also be able to sponsor experienced people with specialised technical skills.   Start-up businesses must operate in STEM fields.

The new TSS visa will be used as a vehicle for the new visa and significantly, and includes a proposed pathway to permanent residency after 3 years.
