Skills Shortage Survey (AIG/Deloitte)
Jul 15, 2010
A new Australian Industries Group (AIG)/Deloitte CEO Survey has revealed that more than one third (34.7%) of businesses believe there is a high to extreme risk of skills shortages negatively impacting on the operation of their businesses this year - a figure that rises to almost one half (47.5%) looking ahead to 2015.
According to the survey, which involved more than 400 companies of all sizes, it found that skill shortages were intensifying in occupations associated with manufacturing, construction and engineering, which are pivotal to the Australian economy. Skilled vacancies employers are struggling to fill included: metal fitters and machinists; professional engineers; business administration managers and accountants; and metal casting, forging and finishing tradespersons.
According to a majority of the respondents, these vacancies reflect a lack of both the occupation-specific skills and the underpinning skills and experience among applicants. Inadequate local training options are also affecting the quality of applicants.
In light of the survey results, Ai Group has called on the Government to build on support provided as part of the recent Budget, which included an extension of apprenticeship bonuses and investment in the VET system.
