457 Visa Changes

On July 1, 2010 several changes occur to the temporary employer sponsored 457 visa.

These changes are:

TSMIT Salary Increase

From July 1, 2010, the TSMIT (Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold) will increase from $45,220 to $47,480. This is the minimum base salary that must be paid a 457 employee for the visa approval to be sponsored by an Australian employer for a SBS 457 visa. Employers must, however, pay the market rate salary if this is higher than the TSMIT.

457 TRANSITION FROM ASCO TO ANZSCO

In line with DIAC's strategy to convert the old ASCO system to the ANZSCO accross all visa subclassed, like the new SOL, the new 457 & ENS list are issued in ANZSCO codes. This list will be based on the ANZSCO system of occupational classifications rather than the current ASCO system. The composition of the list of occupations has not actually changed. See the new list here: Comlaw

Exemption from English language testing

Applicants working in trade occupations are required to do an English test (IELTS Test) to qualify for a 457 visa. However, if the salary level is over a certain minimum threshold, they are exempt from English testing. The threshold will increase from $81,040 to $85,090.
