Following the Vietnam war in the 1970's over 2 million fled Vietnam. Australia was one of the top 'Western' destinations. There are approximately 160,000 Vietnamese born in Australian residents today. The Vietnam born population now makes up approximately 1% of the Australian population. Originally most entered via the humanitarian stream, now mostly via the family migration stream.

Visas:
As well as the general range of visa streams, there are several advantages for potential Vietnamese migrants including:

  • Skilled Visas: Many Vietnamese nationals come to Australia to avail of the world class education system available in Australia. School Fees are also comparatively cheaper their US & Canadian counterparts. This may also be a strong pathway to permanent residence. Students who study in Australia in approved degree (or higher) courses for '2 years' may qualify for the Skilled Independent - Onshore visa (Subclass 885) or the Skilled Graduate - Provisional (Subclass 485).
  • Sponsored Family Visas: with so many Vietnamese expats now citizens or permanent residents in Australia, maybe you can combine your skills and be sponsored by your relative?
  • Student Visas: Vietnamese nationals are considered relatively medium risk of overstay/breaching visa conditions, therefore is granted Assessment Level 2 (i.e. some evidence required).
  • Tourists: Vietnamese nationals are eligible to apply for a tourist visa (Subclass 676).
  • Close Ties: No matter what visa suits you, because of the volume of Vietnamese expats in Australia you can be assured of a network of friends and support.
