Skilled Graduate Visa 485

Skilled Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution and allowing the holder and his/her dependents to remain in Australia for certain period of time after finishing the study. However, it is important to take note that it is the sole responsibility of the visa holder to find a job.

485 Visa has two streams:

1. Graduate Workstream

For international students with an eligible qualification who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the list of eligible occupations. Once granted, visa under this stream has a validity of 18 months.

Specific requirements include:

  • nominate an occupation on the MLTSSL.
  • positive skills assessment by relevant assessing authority suitable to the nominated occupation.
  • if skills were assessed on the basis of a qualification obtained in Australia while on a student visa, the qualification must have been obtained as a result of studying a CRICOS-registered course.
  • have met the Australian study requirement in the past six months.
  • each degree, diploma or trade qualification used to meet the Australian study requirement is closely related to the nominated skilled occupation.

2. Post–Study Workstream

This stream is only available to international students who applied for and was granted, their first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. This is likewise for those who graduated with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider. Once granted, the validity is up to four years from the date the visa is granted depending on the visa applicant's qualification.

Specific requirements include:

  • first student visa granted on or after 5 November 2011.
  • hold an eligible qualification.
  • qualification was conferred or awarded by an Australian university or non-university education provider that is registered on the CRICOS.
  • study for the qualification(s) satisfied the Australian study requirement in the past six months.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Skilled Graduate Visa, supporting documents and other substantial evidence must be submitted at the time the application has been made to DIBP. Eligibility requirements include:

(1)  must be under 50 years of age

(2)  must hold an eligible visa

(3)  must have met the English language requirement

(4)  must have met the Australia study requirement in the last six months

(5)  must have met the health and character requirements

(6)  must have health insurance in Australia

Conditions

Condition 8501 must be imposed which requires the visa holder to have adequate health insurance while in Australia.

Pathway to Permanent Residence

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is an 18-month up to 4 years temporary residence visa allowing recently graduated students to obtain the required work experience to apply for permanent residence. While on a Skilled Graduate Subclass 485 it may be possible to apply for other visas if eligibility criteria are met, including:
