For people who want to visit Australia for a holiday, including visiting relatives, for three to 12 months, but don't have intentions of working, then a tourist visa must be applied for. In some cases they can be extended, provided there is no Condition 8503 (no further stay) attached.
Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) - Visitor - Subclass 976
This visa is only available to certain passport holders. It is an electronic visa (i.e. no stamp in passport), stored in the DIAC immigration system, and can only be applied for offshore. It is for short term visitors and grants up to three months on each visit within a 12 month validity period. An ETA cannot be extended, although you may apply for a different visa.
eVisitor - Subclass 651
This visa is only available to European Union and some other European countries. This subclass is for visitors to Australia for tourism or short term business purposes. It is an electronic visa and can only be applied for while offshore. You can stay in Australia for up to 3 months on each visit to Australia within a 12 month period from the date of grant. An eVisitor visa cannot be extended, although you may apply for a different visa.
Tourist Visa - Subclass 676
This temporary tourist visa is for visitors staying for three, six or 12 months. This can be lodged while offshore or onshore. Some visitors are able to apply for this visa online (Subclass e676). You can study for up to three months on this visa and it ca be granted for single or multiple travel depending on the purpose of your visit and personal circumstances.
Sponsored Family Visitor Visa - Subclass 679
This visa is suitable if you have an Australian family member to sponsor you for a stay of up to 12 months. The sponsor guarantees that the visa holder will leave before visa expiry, and a security bond may be requested. It may be granted for three, six or 12 months. You may study for up to three months on this visa.
